3 Border Towns for a Two-Country Vacation

Travelers that are looking for the best of both worlds can find it in a border town. Travelers have the benefit of enjoying two cities with many similarities and vast differences. Traveling from one country to the next can easily be done and there are many fascinating landmarks to visit in both places.

Johor Bahru and Singapore

Johor Bahru is in the southern part of Malaysia that is connected to Singapore. Travelers enjoy beautiful landmarks in Johor Bahru such as Tioman Island and the waterfalls at Kota Tinggi. The most recommended way to travel from Johor to Singapore is by bus or taxi. The downside of traveling by bus is the customs procedure. The Johor Bahru Taxi Terminal is the only place visitors can find specially licensed transportation that is allowed into Singapore. Regardless of how travelers arrive, it is important to always carry a passport for identity checks.

While visiting Singapore, tourists are encouraged to visit the Singapore Zoo and Singapore Flyer. The Johor-Singapore Causeway allows tourists and locals to travel freely through both cities. Many travelers go back and forth from each city to enjoy the shopping malls in Johor Bahru and the outdoor attractions in Singapore.

Niagara Falls and New York

Most travelers go to Niagara Falls to get a glimpse of one of the largest waterfalls the world has ever known, but visiting Niagara Falls also means the opportunity to visit two countries. On the New York side of the falls, there are trees and natural walking paths that have been created over time. While in Canada you are sure to run into a strip of vendors and chain restaurants right on the border. The Maid of the Mist tour and the Aquarium of Niagara are both crowd favorites that give tourists the ultimate experience of both sides.

It’s easy to cross from one border to the next with a passport. Children under 15 years old are not required to have a passport, but they are required to have formal identification. The border can be crossed by foot, car, or bus. Regardless, be sure to bring comfortable shoes!

Tijuana and San Diego

Visitors from San Diego to Tijuana immediately notice the difference between the two towns. While visitors enjoy the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park on the United States side it is tempting to go to Mexico to experience the culture and visit all the shops on Avenida Revolución.

Tourists can get to and from Tijuana and San Diego by foot, trolley, or car. The most recommended way to enter and depart is via trolley. Travelers are required to present a valid passport and proof of citizenship at the border. Visitors are encouraged to only drink bottled water during their visit and to bring comfortable shoes.

Some of the greatest border towns have historical implications that make each town interesting in their own way. Planning a vacation to a border town is the best way to get the most out of any trip.
